At the height of his fame, surrealist, Salvador Dali, was commissioned by the Italian government to illustrate ‘The Divine Comedy’ by Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). Dali was given eight years to complete the artwork which was to be released as a limited-edition in 1965, marking the 700th anniversary of Dante’s birth. His works were produced using a tradition Japanese woodcut to mimic the original watercolor paintings. With this technique, 3,500 wood blocks, approximately 35 separate blocks per illustration, were carved, and the 101 works that make up Salvador Dali the Divine Comedy were executed over a 14 year period from 1951 to 1964. The wood blocks were promptly destroyed to insure the limited availability of these masterworks.
