Matisse often made drawings to inform his paintings and sculptures, feeling that these drawings should be quick, gestural exercises that captured the form and emotion evoked in him by the subject. Founded by Fernand Mourlot, the Atelier is credited in art history with the resurgence of the lithograph and was recognized as the premiere print studio in Paris. During the twentieth century, artists such as Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Raoul Dufy, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso worked directly with Mourlot to create and executed their prints.
